Reflection on Subjects

  • Kinetic and Reactor Design

One of the subject that I realize past subjects knowledge are the fundamental of this subject. Sadly, I’ve sold my previous textbooks already. KRD is one of the hardest subject I’m taking this semester. So, I might be “kiasu” studying this subject on weekend. Hopefully I can finish all of the tutorial given every week by my own. I’m grateful that Dr. Suzana force us to solve some exercise during class. At least, I have experience solving some problem regarding KRD. With this subject, I get better understanding on various type of reactor. Why different reactor suit for certain chemical phase.

I really love the way Mr. Tazli teaching us. Using video to teach is the most effective way for student. The interactive are strong. By video teaching, it ease our life a lot. When we missed some words, we can rewind back. Very brilliant way of teaching. We can understands the lecture every single words. After I learnt chapter 6, I can understand well the reaction happen in the production of levulinic acid (second project). How lignocellulosic biomass feed is transform into many product such as glucose, levulinic acid, bio-plastics, ethanol, and formic acid. Without KRD knowledge, our life will be in mess.

  • Chemical Process Dynamic, Instrumentation and Control

Walaoweihhhh!!! The toughest subject in this semester. Laplace equation everywhere. I have to flip back my 1st year textbook ODE, to regain back my lost ODE memory. The senior also advised me to study well in CPDIC. So, I hope I’ll be more prepared than the seniors. Dr. Abbas also good in teaching, I can clearly imagine what he trying to deliver to us. I can see the fundamental of this subject, CPDIC, why we need all of this various sensor on the reactor. Without CPDIC knowledge in industry, the factory will go BOOM! or lack of profits, perhaps. I guess.

This is the subject where I was looking for the logic in life reality. After I learnt all of the topics, then I understand where this subject bring me to. I found that PFD and block diagram is the basic thing to start constructing a reactor or event plant. But doing the transfer function for the project reaction is the hardest thing to do in this project.

  • Process Safety and Loss Prevention

I find out that this subject is interesting since we can analyze the potential hazard and accident that might be happened. How the unexpected hazard happened in industries all written in this subject. I realize that this subject is important because the can preserve the lifespan of one company. If the big boss just simply neglecting this knowledge in business, thinking that profit is priority before safety, they might lose their company soon. I can imagine that I’m the forensic agent at the accident site when solving the problems in the textbook.

The most important aspect to be focus on when constructing a plant or reactor. Safety first rather than anything. Plant can be reconstructed but life cannot. By learning PLSP, I was enlighten about the important of Hazard Analysis (HAZOP) in every pipeline and reactor. HAZOP is mandatory in any plant in order to minimize the probability of possible risk as low as possible to the worker and working environment.

Reflection On Group Project

  • Reflection On Board Game

Into the Reactor’s World, the name of the board game. The board game is idealize by the snake and ladder board game with the combination of 3 subjects that I’m taking this semester. As I can see all these 3 subjects are related to each other in the real industrial world, I decided to embed these concept onto the board game. By this academic board game, we can promote the chemical engineering to the player, or society. Not only promoting, but also tend to test the engineering knowledge among the players during playing the board game. In the making of this board game, I’m gaining and can sharpen my knowledge and skill on designing, using the Prezi, Powtoon, Youtube, web and etc which are very useful for my future career.

  • Reflection of Questions Posed for KRD, CPDIC and PSLP on the Board Game

As we going to produce an academic board game, we decided to come out with a question cards that has 3 levels of difficulties: Easy, Medium, and Hard. Thus, the player’s knowledge on those 3 subjects knowledge can be tested. Besides that, it make it more challenging and also interesting as we put a little stress on the game. Psychologically, this stress able to give out a lot of benefits to the player, as the player tend to absorb the knowledge easily throughout the game since it is interesting.

  • Contributions and Role to This Project

The first group meeting is the day we brainstorming the ideas and concept of the board game. Then the job distribution also has been done on the first day. We agreed on the snake and ladder concept. Thus implement the 3 subjects onto the snake and ladder board game concept. We made a bit modification by adding a quiz card to the game. The 2nd meeting was about making progress on the board game design and improvement on the concept. Izzudin and I doing the designing and the rest are thinking about the question to be molded onto the game. For the third meeting, we focusing more on web design and the video to be put on the web. Overall, I must say that I am the accuracy coach and the reporter in the group.

Reflection On Group Project 2

This project has brought me to the UTP IRC (library). I found that the sources from internet not really sufficient enough for me to do in depth research about the production of levulinic acid. When I step into the IRC, I found that there are a lot of books regarding the production of levulinic acid. These book ease me a lot. All those books describe in details about each process step and reactor used. Why like this and not like that. Then I know that books enlighten me more than research paper at the internet.

  • Contributions and Role to This Project

I must say that my role in this project is an accuracy coach and the reporter in the group. I did the literature review, mass balance, reactor sizing, HAZOP table and mechanical design for this project.

Suggestions

The ideas of improving the understanding among students in the subjects is by industrial exposure, experiment and also experience working on the subject’s field. The reactor diagram only does not enough illustrate the actual industry in real life.
