Reflection on Subjects

  • Kinetic and Reactor Design

Kinetic and Reactor Design is one of the toughest subjects that I have encountered in my three years study in UTP. After attending the lectures by Dr. Suzana, I realized that having a good engineering fundamental is really important in order to excel in this subject. However, due to the long breaks, I have almost forgotten most of the things that I have studied previously. The thought of starting everything from zero really worried me as I’m scared that I might not be able to pick up with the pace of the lecturers. Although Kinetic and Reactor Design is a very hard subject, I will persevere and try my very best to get the best out of this subject. The learning strategies that I have made for myself in order to master this subject are paying more attention to the lecturer during the lecture, noting down important tips provided, attempting every questions, examples and also tutorials provided by the lecturers and be humble enough to ask for helps from lecturers or friends when I’m lost. As for now, I’m grateful that Dr. Suzana is providing us with multiples challenging examples and giving us time to solve those questions during lectures. I think Kinetic and Reactor Design is a really important subject as I can see how it can improve me as a practicing engineer in the future.

In the second half of the semester, Dr.Tazli take over the class and introduced to us a whole new learning system. I'm really amazed and impressed with this kind of new way of learning as I find it interesting. The videos provided by Dr. Tazli enable me to grasp the important concepts of a chapter easily. With the videos, I can replay back the whole video whenever I feel like I have missed something or unable to understand certain concepts. Other than that, it is very convenient as I can play the videos whenever I'm free. I truly believe that this is a very briliant way to enhance my learning, thus, this kind of new learning system should be implemented by the university.

  • Chemical Process Dynamic, Instrumentation and Control

Chemical Process Dynamic, Instrumentation and Control is another subject that is really hard to master and is standing on par with Kinetics and Reactor Design in term of difficulty. It is also a subject that requires a good engineering fundamental. Sometimes, I find it really hard to fully grasp the concept of the subject. Dr. Abbas has been a really good lecturer for trying his very best to make us understand the subject. The assignments given by him to us every week have proven to be really useful to me as they have helped me to understand the subject better. Through this subject, I can see how this subject can improve me as a practicing engineer in the future. Therefore, I will pour in more effort in order to get a better result in this subject.

In the second half of the semester, Dr. Haslinda take over the class. Dr. Haslinda is very patient in teaching us. I also find Dr. Haslinda simple, direct and usage of everyday's example in explaining the subject to us very easy to be absorbed. She also provided us with examples to be solved together in the class, which further enhance our understanding. Because of her thorough explaination, I find myself love CPDIC more and more as I am able to undertand and grasp the overall concept better.

  • Process Safety and Loss Prevention

I think Process Safety and Loss Prevention is a very interesting subjects as this subject is all about analyzing the hazards and the prevention methods. Identifying potential hazards, evaluating the hazards and their impacts to people and structure, assessing the risk due to the hazard and also proposing suitable mitigation techniques to eliminate or reduce he hazards are among the things that I will learn in this subject. Knowing all these contents of the subject, I really feel that this subject is very significant and vital in order to prepare us to work in the industry in the future. During the first week of attending lectures from Dr. Dzulkarnain, I felt like I’m attending Health, Safety and Environment lectures all over again. Dr. Dzulkarnain also provides us with some challenging questions to solve during the lectures and this prove to be helpful as we can ask him whenever we got stuck or encounter any problems with the questions. I think this is a very good method in order for us to learn to solve the questions.

In the second half of the semester, Dr. Dzulkarnain started to give us more assignments. I believe these assignments are given to us to enable us to understand the topic better. Other than that, he also provided us with his lecture slides ahead of time so that we can read the notes before attending his lecture. This is a very good approach as it enables us to understand and have better grasp as we have read about the subject before.

Reflection On Group Project 1

  • Reflection On Board Game

Our board game is called “Into the Reactor’s World”. The name of the board game was contributed by me. The board game follows the conceptual of snakes and ladders board game but we add in a little bit twist to the game by using some play cards and including some obstacles along the routes as well. I think that my group has successfully integrated all three subjects; Kinetic and Reactor Design, Chemical Process Dynamic, Instrumentation and Control and Process Safety and Loss Prevention into this board game. As the fundamentals and concepts of the three subjects are embedded in this board game, I truly believe that after playing it, players will gain a lot of valuable knowledge regarding the three subjects and have a better grasp of the three subjects. This board game can make learning become fun as you can share the joy and fun with others while learning at the same time. Other than that, players will also grow strong affinity towards chemical engineering after playing it. In making this board game together with my group members, I learn that working together in a team is really important as it is the driving force behind the successful completion of our board game. None of us is as smart as all of us. This saying is true to a great extent. We put in each and everyone’s idea and combine our idea to make this board game. In making of this board game also, I’m been exposed to software that I have never used before such as Adobe Illustrator, Powtoon, Piktochart and Prezi.

  • Reflection of Questions Posed for KRD, CPDIC and PSLP on the Board Game

As the board game is based on these three subjects, questions related to these subjects will be asked when playing the board game. The questions are differentiated into three different level of difficulty, easy, medium and hard. To be able to answer these questions, knowledge on these three subjects are definitely required. As having questions in the board game is more challenging, players will have a longer lasting impression of the questions and answer of the questions after playing the board game. This will definitely benefits the players academically as it will be easier for them to learn and absorb the knowledge in this way.

  • Contributions and Role to This Project

My role in this group is the group is the organizer and job distributor. I organized meetings so that every member can meet up and communicate with each other regarding our group project. On our first meeting, I asked every group member to brainstorm on ideas on the board game before the meeting so that everyone can contribute some ideas to the group project. Within the first meeting, our group has already obtained the overall concept and design of our board game. I distributed job to each and every one so that everyone will get a fair amount of work. Besides, I created a Facebook group for my group as a medium for our communication. This enables us to communicate with one another easily and to share our ideas and opinions regarding our project.  Other than that, I am the web designer in my group; I helped to create the website of our group and designed our group webpage. Overall, my role in the group is a moderator or a chairperson as I keep the group on track, ensures focus and maintains full participation of group member.

Reflection On Group Project 2

From the second group project, I truly learn a lot of new things that I have never encountered before. I believe all these things will benefit me in the future. To gain more insight of this project, for the first time in my life, I have read so many online research paper regarding technologies to turn waste into wealth. When our group decided on the technology that turns waste into levulinic acid, I did a lot research on the production of levulinic acid as I have no knowledge about levulinic acid before this. Thankfully, through this project, now I believe I know a lot more about the procution of this acid. This project is also quite mind-boogling. As all of us are quite new to this project, we struggled at first to get a grasp on how to complete everything that needed to be done in this project. With the assistance and explanation from our friends and also our respected lecturer, Dr. Tazli, we are able to complete this project. Nevertheless, I'm truly grateful that I'm able to learn a lot and gain new knowledge from this project. Although this project took up a huge chunk of our time, I believe it's totally worth it considering all the knowledge that I gained from it.

  • Contributions and Role to This Project

For the second project, I still act as an moderator and chairperson in my group. I have distributed the jobs for this project equally among the members of the group. As for myself, I have completed the literature survery, drawn the process flow diagram (PFD) of the reaction involved, uploading our works in our e-portfolio, assisting in equating for the mass balance of the technology and also assisting my team members in their works.

Suggestions

In my opinion, in order for us to have a better grasp and understanding of the three subjects, industrial exposure is necessary as it will assist our learning in a better way and expose us to actual industry in real life. Other than that, more questions and examples with solutions provided should be given to the students as a way of self-learning. As for the project, I think I need to improve my personal technical skill in order to be better at web designing and also at some other areas. Overall, my group members have been very cooperative and I am grateful to be in this group with them.
