Reflection on Subjects

  • Kinetic and Reactor Design

Being a chemical engineering student, I have realized that KRD is one of the challenging subjects that I faced during my 3 years of degree study. My reason to say so is because its application on complex chemical engineering problems that involves plenty of theories and principles in mathematics, natural science and engineering sciences. From the topics I have learnt so far, I understand the knowledge of fundamentals of different types of reactors and their operation. Besides that, I am able to apply the principles of chemical reaction engineering in solving some problems for homogeneous and heterogeneous systems under the guide of Dr Suzana. I am looking forward to enhance my knowledge on this subject by this project and the rest of this semester by Dr Mohd Tazli Azizan as I realized that the importance of this subject and its relationship with other subjects such as PSLP or CPDIC.

Under guidance and teaching of Mr.Tazli, I learnt a lot in this subject. I have experienced a new learning style which is somehow effective and special to me like “e-learning” since I am studying in UTP. I also exposed to something which is really new to me like online quiz and take home test, one of the tests that take pretty much of my time of thinking. Overall, I think KRD is an interesting subject and I hope I would score it in this semester. At last, I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Mr. Tazli as he is a great lecturer.

  • Chemical Process Dynamic, Instrumentation and Control

As long as I have been through this subject, I learnt that this subject is quite tough and challenging for me. At first, it enlightened me the general concepts and purposes of process dynamics, control and instrumentation in industry. Then, I started to learn the transfer function derivations from unsteady-state mass & energy balances and first & second order processes dynamic behaviour. From here, I realized that I was facing a tough challenge as it required a lot of application of mathematical knowledge that I have forgotten such as Laplace transform, Taylor series expansion, ODE and so forth. I could never forget the glimpse of disappointment of our lecturer, Dr Abbas on us because of our inadequate knowledge on this subject. Therefore, I decided to take this as an opportunity to broaden my knowledge and expertise this subject to make sure I won’t let Dr Abbas down as he is one of the dedicated and responsible lecturers.

Dr. Haslinda is my lecturer for second half of this subject. I think she is a very nice lecturer and she teaches us well and make me have more understandings on this subject. She took care of every student’s knowledge on this subject and she really emphasizes on her teaching materials. Overall, I was having a very good second-half of this subject with Dr. Haslinda.

  • Process Safety and Loss Prevention

Comparing to the previous subjects I have mentioned, I find out this subject is interesting and important as it helps us to be able to aware and analyse the potential hazards that might be happened on us in industry. The difficulty of this subject to me is the application of lengthy and complex equations and derivations to its related problems. However, I feel confident to succeed this subject under the good way of teaching by Dr. Dzulkarnain that eased my study a lot. I hope I can improve in this subject in the rest of this semester.

PSLP is an interesting and important subject which will help us in our future career in sake of our safety. Dr.Zulkarnain remained as our lecturer and he taught us a lot about this subject. He gave assignment in every lecturer to make sure we understood what he taught. Overall, I would like to thank Dr.Dzulkarnain for his teaching.

Reflection On Group Project

  • Reflection On Board Game

“Into the Reactor’s World” is what our group have named our board game. This board game is using the concept of conventional Snake and Ladder Board Game but it is being alternated on its way of playing. Our group has embedded all 3 subjects which are KRD, CPDIC and PSLP as we can see the interconnection between these subjects. The purpose of the invention of this game is to academically promote the principles and concepts of chemical engineering to public. By playing the board game, the knowledge of player on chemical engineering will be tested and evaluated.

In the progress of making this board game, I am going to enhance my knowledge and skills on how to design a board game and improvise it to become more interesting.

  • Reflection of Questions Posed for KRD, CPDIC and PSLP on the Board Game

As it is an academic board game that we are going to make, we decided to alternate the way of playing by adding the concept of question cards as our obstacles on certain steps in our game to test the knowledge of our player on these 3 subjects. There are different levels of difficulty for our question cards: Easy, Medium and Hard. Thus, the difficulty of the questions will be one of the important factors for the player to win the game based on their knowledge. Through this board game, I believe player will broaden their knowledge and find their interest in these subjects by our interesting board game.

  • Contributions and Role to This Project

My role in this group is to contribute some ideas on the board game. I help my team to finalize the concept of board game and provide my own opinions on how to modify the board game in order to improve our board game. Besides, my task is to prepare questions for two subjects which are KRD and CPDIC as part of our board game. I also give some suggestion on the design of our board game and also our website. Moreover, I design a mind map for CPDIC subject by using Prezi which are going to be put on our website. Overall, I think my role in our group is more like an accuracy coach or a reporter that give my best to let my group on the right path.

Reflection On Group Project 2

Although it is called as mini project, it was not that easy. I would like to thank my group mates who worked out very hard in order to complete this project together. This project was very challenging to us because it required us to gain extra knowledge to solve the problems that we encountered in this project. This project has enlightened me to gain more knowledge which I think will be very helpful in my future career. Overall, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude again to my group mates for their efforts and commitment as well as Dr.Tazli for his guidance.

  • Contributions and Role to This Project

I was in charge of the P&ID drawing for the process of acid hydrolysis in producing levulinic acid from biomass. I was in charge of the mind map of CPDIC as well. In this project, I was more like a reporter as I was listening to my group mates with a view to present final draft of project.

Suggestions

In my opinion, to be honest, every one of us does not have adequate knowledge for these 3 subjects as we have not great understanding about these 3 subjects as we are not exposed enough to the subjects by experiments or industrial field trips. So, I think we could really broaden our knowledge by designing the board game and promote the principles of the subjects to the public by the way of how the reactor works.
